How to protect your furniture during a move?

    by BrandSource Canada

For most people, moving is an ambitious and even laborious project. One often-asked question is: How can you avoid damaging your furniture? How can you protect it from being scratched or broken?

Here are a few tips designed to facilitate the transportation and protection of your furniture during your move.

How to Protect Your Furniture During a Move

Furniture is most often damaged during the transportation phase of moving.

However, there are several things you can do to protect your furniture during a move.

    Here are a few:

    • Cover your furniture with a blanket during transportation.
    • Choose reinforced boxes capable of limiting the risk of shocks.
    • Wrap your more fragile furniture in bubble wrap.

Essential Tools to Have During a Move

There is such an array of tools to consider that it’s easy to get lost in the process. Of course, you have your good old classics like the hammer, the screwdriver, the tape measure, etc. However, in the frenzy of a move we have a tendency to forget some essential tools.

The following tools are ranked at the top of the \"perfect mover’s\" list:

    • Wrapping paper (avoid newsprint because the ink can stain the furniture)
    • Screwdriver (flat-head to Phillips... in short, several versions)
    • Adhesive tape
    • Moving straps
    • Utility knife with retractable blade
    • Vertical hand trolley
    • Markers

During a move, it’s important to make sure you have enough packing materials. This valuable commodity can prevent a lot of damage! Packing paper, blankets, tape, etc. In short, have everything you need to maximize the protection of your furniture during the move.

It’s also important to properly prepare the set of tools. Once moving day is underway, you won’t have time to hunt them down.

How to Avoid Losing Parts During a Move

How many of you have already faced this problem? In the general mayhem of the move, we often misplace screws, bolts, and even parts of some furniture!

To avoid this kind of inconvenience, here are a few tips to prevent the loss of various parts—sometimes important ones—during your move:

    • Label and identify each of the parts (in order to know what goes with what).
    • Avoid dismantling furniture when it’s not necessary.
    • If you must absolutely dismantle a piece of furniture, store the small parts in plastic bags.

If the furniture that you want to move is too big, too heavy, too fragile or too old, then it may be worth your while to dismantle it. However, if you can avoid dismantling, you reduce your chances of losing parts along the way.

To facilitate the assembly of a piece of furniture, it is also recommended to take photos of the furniture (at different angles). This helps to see clearly how the furniture should be assembled ... and prevents certain excesses of creativity which are not always very appropriate.

In ending, don’t forget that the key to a good move lies in its preparation. If you have everything you need close at hand, you will avoid many unpleasant surprises!
